Artificial Intelligence for Lawyers: Not Ready for Prime Time

Spending even just a few years practicing law, an attorney can see the industry change before their eyes with technology. 

In the past, tech has simply been beneficial in saving time across all industries. Since early automation, new inventions have saved time and money by successfully doing tasks formerly given to people. Recently, workloads have been lifted by Microsoft Excel, and scholarly articles and court reports have been collected into online databases. 

Can everyone still romanticize the infinite potential of online technology? 

A few weeks ago, a story went viral, titled “Here’s What Happens When Your Lawyer Uses ChatGPT” in the New York Times. Relying on ChatGBT for research, a lawyer cited AI-generated cases in court. 

Clearly showing its current limitations in that story, AI may have a limited potential for industries that rely on ethics and precise truth.
